Civil War-era Ruins Being Stabilized at Sweetwater Creek State Park

LITHIA SPRINGS, GA

One of Douglas County’s most beloved historic structures is getting a facelift this summer. The textile mill ruins at Sweetwater Creek State Park are undergoing a stabilization project, which includes installing steel rods, new mortar and concrete caps on pillars.

The structure was once the New Manchester Manufacturing Company, a textile mill burned in 1864 during the Civil War. Today, it is a popular hiking destination for park visitors. Many Georgians recognized the brick ruins in the blockbuster The Hunger Games: Mockingjay with Katniss inside the mill. Once stabilization is complete, park visitors will be able to take guided tours into the mill complex. The area will also be made available for photography, portrait sessions and small weddings.

The three-month project is being conducted by Aegis Restauro, LLC, which specializes in architectural conservation and historic preservation. Sweetwater Creek State Park offers hiking trails, fishing, boating, an interpretive center, ranger programs, yurts, camping and picnic facilities.
