Sitton's Cave Guided Tours

Experience a ranger-led tour of a natural, undeveloped cave at the base of beautiful Cloudland Canyon State Park. Our naturalists lead guided tours of Sitton’s Cave in April, June, July, September, and October. View event calendar.

Registration and requirements:

  • All participants must register and pay before the trip. Call the park office at 706-657-4050 to register.
  • Tours cost is $45 per person.
  • All participants will be required to sign a waiver before the trip. These will be provided at check-in.
  • Group size is limited to a maximum of eight and minimum of two, unless arranged otherwise with the trip guide.
  • Age requirements are 10 years and older. Minors under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent, legal guardian, or approved adult chaperone (teacher, scout leader, church group leader, etc.).
  • No refunds given once you have entered the “dark zone” of the cave (at the stream passage).
  • Trip may be canceled at the guide's discretion (even while underway) if conditions are deemed unsafe for any reason. In this case a full refund will be given.

Other things you should know:

  • Because Sitton’s Cave is known as a “wild cave,” there are no paved trails, handrails OR LIGHTS. You will be scrambling over rocks, crawling through mud on your knees, and possibly wading through a stream during periods of high-rainfall, so you should be reasonably fit and expect to get dirty.
  • Tours last 2 – 2.5 hours. 
  • Temperatures inside the cave range from 56 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit year-round. Warm, moisture-wicking base layers are recommended.
  • All necessary gear and an experienced guide will be provided.
  • Participants should arrive at the Interpretive Center by 9:30 a.m. dressed in clothes they intend to go caving in – long pants, warm shirt, and close-toed shoes. No one will be allowed in the cave with inappropriate footwear, i.e. sandals, crocs, or flip-flops.
  • Participants should bring a full change of clothes, including shoes, to put on after the trip, and a plastic garbage bag or bin for muddy clothes. There are changing rooms at the parking area.
  • If anyone in your group has special medical needs or conditions, please advise the guide beforehand and have necessary medications with you (inhalers, EpiPens, etc.).
  • Groups will meet at the Interpretive Center to put on their caving gear, then drive down the mountain (approximately six miles) to the cave parking area, where they’ll be given a safety talk. It’s a short walk to the cave entrance.

Permits for Self-Guided Caving

Cavers have the opportunity to explore Sitton’s or Case Cave in April, June, July, September, and October. Sitton’s Cave is open to all skill levels. Case Cave requires the use of harnesses/rope and is open to only experienced cavers. Permits require express approval of the park manager.

Registration and requirements:

  • Cavers will be allowed in between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. and must be out 30 minutes before sunset.
  • Both caves may be closed at any time due to inclement weather or safety issues. Please call the park office at least two days prior to arrival to verify the status of the cave.
  • A maximum of 15 people per day (up to 80 per week maximum) will be allowed in the cave.
  • Cavers must fill out a permit request at the park office (see below).
  • Permits are first come, first served.
