The Lady Raven, a shrimping vessel that sank during Hurricane Helene in September 2024, was successfully removed from the East River in Brunswick on April 15. Coastal Resources Division oversaw the operation, utilizing funds generated from commercial fishing license sales. Salonen Marine, a local marine contractor, conducted the removal.
The Lady Raven took on water and sank during the storm, contributing to the sinking of the Dora F, another historic shrimp boat, after their lines snapped under pressure.
Both vessels were identified as environmental hazards due to their proximity and the sheen observed in surrounding waters.
CRD has been actively addressing the issue of derelict vessels along Georgia’s coast, with estimates of up to 180 sunken vessels posing potential hazards to navigation and the environment. The successful removal of the Lady Raven marks a significant step in these ongoing efforts.
“Removing the Lady Raven not only eliminates a navigational hazard but also helps protect the health of our coastal ecosystems,” said Paul Medders, CRD’s Habitat and Restoration Unit lead. The operation underscores the importance of proactive measures in maintaining the safety and environmental integrity of Georgia’s waterways.
