Job Summary

Support biological and technical staff by collecting data used to manage Georgia’s marine fisheries.  Required to work under general supervision and must be comfortable working independently without direct supervision.  Associate would routinely work on weekends, evenings, and holidays but hours within the standard workweek (Monday-Friday) could be needed on occasion.  Must be comfortable using tablets for data collection. Valid driver’s license is required for this position.

Primary responsibility will be conducting interviews with marine recreational anglers for the Marine Recreational Information Program (MRIP) Access Point Angler Intercept Survey (APAIS). The associate would conduct 1 to 3 survey assignment days per week  from March to December with limited number of workdays in January and February. Assignments occur at saltwater public access sites (e.g., ramps, marinas, piers, bridges, and beaches), for 6-hour intervals (0800-1400, 1100-1700, or 1400-2000), within the six coastal Georgia counties (Chatham, Bryan, Liberty, McIntosh, Glynn and Camden). The purpose of this survey is to collect individual catch data (release and harvest), trip information, and general fishing behavior from saltwater recreational anglers.

The associate will be expected to follow survey protocols while completing interviews, accurately identify marine finfish species, collect weight and length measurements of harvested fish plus maintain and care for equipment. This position requires timely completion of assignment data, review and response to follow up questions, and other administrative tasks. Associate would also be expected to maintain a professional relationship with anglers while conducting interviews and act as a source of information regarding objectives and status of the Marine Fisheries Section’s fisheries research activities.
