CoastFest 2020 Essay Contest

In conjunction with CoastFest 2020, the Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is hosting an essay contest.

Students from elementary, middle and high school are encouraged to write a short essay (between 400 and 500 words) from the prompt: "What makes the Georgia Coast unique and what did I learn about it at Virtual CoastFest 2020?"

First, second and third place awards will be given to Georgia students in elementary, middle and high school. Schools should collect the essays and submit their top five entries to:

Home-schooled students may have their parent or guardian submit the essay directly. Please indicate the grade of the entrant student.

All essays should be formatted to include the student's:

  • Name
  • Grade
  • Hometown
  • School
  • Teacher

Essays must be submitted by Friday, Oct. 9, 2020. Awards will be announced Friday, Oct. 16, 2020, via press release and a notification to the schools of the winning students. This contest is open to all students residing and attending school in the State of Georgia.

A committee of Coastal Resources Division staff and its partners will judge the essays based on the student's ability to adhere to the prompt, incorporate CoastFest's theme of "Our Marvelous Marshes" and creative writing ability.

Prizes will be mailed to students' schools for distribution.
